As of 18 October 2026, X's documentation allows editing a post for 30 minutes after publishing, up to 5 edits, and every edit returns a new post ID (X edit posts guide). Instagram's media reference documents only comment_enabled as updatable (Meta IG Media reference). Threads documents DELETE /{threads-media-id} and no edit endpoint. TikTok's Content Posting API documents neither.

Which platforms let you edit or delete a post through the API?

Eight of 12 document an edit for text or caption, and only X documents the ID consequence of an edit. Each cell below is quoted or paraphrased from the official page named in the sources, checked on 18 October 2026. Where a page states nothing, the cell says "not documented" rather than "no", because silence on a reference page is not a statement that the platform refuses the call.

Zalo is left out. Its official documentation pages render client-side and could not be fetched on 18 October 2026, so no cell could be sourced from a live page.

Can you edit a tweet through the X API?

Yes, for 30 minutes and up to 5 times, and each edit creates a new post ID. X's edit rules table reads "30 minutes from original post", "5 edits maximum" and "Each edit creates a new post ID" (X edit posts guide, checked 18 October 2026).

That guide covers reading edit data. The create-post reference documents how to write an edit: the edit_options object takes one required field, previous_post_id, "The ID of the Post being edited" (X create post reference, checked 18 October 2026). There is no separate edit route, so an edit is POST /2/tweets with that object. The delete reference describes deletePosts with the tweet.write scope and says nothing about edit chains (X delete post reference, checked 18 October 2026).

Can you edit an Instagram caption via the API?

Not according to the documentation: the IG Media reference lists one updatable setting, comment_enabled, described as "Enable or disable comments on an Instagram Media". Caption does not appear as an updatable field, and live video media is not supported for update (Meta IG Media reference, checked 18 October 2026).

Delete is documented for Facebook Login for Business with a Facebook user access token. It covers "Non-ad posts, Stories, Reels and entire carousel albums", and the page states "Individually deleting media within a carousel is not supported." The DELETE heading shows a POST in its request syntax, so confirm the verb against a live call before relying on it.

Can you edit a Threads post via API?

No edit endpoint is documented. Meta's Threads documentation index lists a page for deleting your own posts and no page about editing (Threads documentation index, checked 18 October 2026).

The delete page states "The Delete endpoint has a rate limit of 100 deletes per day per account" and requires threads_basic plus threads_delete (Threads delete posts, checked 18 October 2026). Absence from an index is not a statement that edit is impossible, so the table says "not documented". For the publishing side, see the Threads API publishing guide.

Does deleting a post through the API remove it everywhere?

No: every delete endpoint in the table takes one platform-specific ID, such as DELETE /{threads-media-id} or DELETE /2/tweets/{id}, and acts on that one post. A post you published to several networks exists as separate posts with separate IDs, so each needs its own delete call.

Within one platform, the limits differ. Instagram deletes entire carousel albums but not single carousel children. Facebook restricts API delete to "select developers". Telegram deletes only messages sent less than 48 hours ago. No page checked on 18 October 2026 says that a delete also removes reposts, shares or copies made by other users.

What do the other platforms document for edit and delete?

Facebook Pages

Updating a Page post is POST /{page_post_id}, and message sits in the parameter list next to is_hidden, is_pinned, is_published, privacy, place, scheduled_publish_time and feed_story_visibility. The deleting section says "Only select developers can perform this operation using the API" and points everyone else to Business Manager (Meta Page Post reference, checked 18 October 2026). Treat delete on Facebook as unavailable to a general app until your own app proves otherwise.

LinkedIn

The Posts API page lists the fields available to update: commentary, contentCallToActionLabel, contentLandingPage, lifecycleState and adContext fields (LinkedIn Posts API, checked 18 October 2026). Media is not in that list. The page describes w_member_social for posting as a member and w_organization_social for posting as an organization, restricted to ADMINISTRATOR, DIRECT_SPONSORED_CONTENT_POSTER and CONTENT_ADMIN roles. It does not split update and delete rules between the two, so one row covers both.

Pinterest

Update Pin is flagged "currently in beta and not available to all apps" in the v5 OpenAPI description (version 5.28.0). Its PinUpdate schema contains ai_disclosures, alt_text, board_id, board_section_id, carousel_slots, description, link and title. The carousel_slots items carry only description, link and title, so no image or video field is exposed (Pinterest API v5 OpenAPI description, checked 18 October 2026).

Reddit

The API reference describes /api/editusertext as "Edit the body text of a comment or self-post." That sentence documents body text only. It does not list the title or a link post's URL as editable, so those cells are "not documented", and a title fix has to go through delete and resubmit (Reddit API reference, checked 18 October 2026).

Telegram

The edit methods return the edited Message. The 48-hour limit on the edit pages applies to "business messages that were not sent by the bot", while deleteMessage states "A message can only be deleted if it was sent less than 48 hours ago" and that bots with can_post_messages can delete outgoing messages in channels (Telegram Bot API, checked 18 October 2026). The pages reviewed state no edit window for a bot's own channel messages.

YouTube and Google Business Profile

videos.update overwrites: "the property's existing value will be deleted" when you omit a mutable property from a part you send, and updating snippet requires snippet.title and snippet.categoryId (YouTube videos.update, checked 18 October 2026). Send the full part, not just the changed field. Local posts patch only the fields named in updateMask, and neither the patch nor the delete page carries a deprecation notice (GBP localPosts.patch, checked 18 October 2026).

Bluesky

putRecord is documented as "Write a repository record, creating or updating it as needed", with repo, collection, rkey and record parameters (AT Protocol putRecord lexicon, checked 18 October 2026). It is a generic record write. No page checked describes it as a post edit, so whether an overwritten post shows as edited is not documented.

TikTok

TikTok's Content Posting API pages describe creating a post and checking its status, and say nothing about editing or deleting one (TikTok Content Posting API get started, checked 18 October 2026). All five TikTok cells therefore read "not documented".

What do these limits mean for a scheduling tool?

These points follow from the documented limits above. They are consequences, not measurements. A typo fix is one API call on Facebook Pages, LinkedIn, YouTube, Pinterest (beta), Reddit self-posts, Google Business Profile and Telegram. On Instagram it is a delete and republish, if delete is available to the login flow you use. On Threads the documentation lists delete and no edit, so the same flow applies.

Delete and repost has costs that edit does not. The new post has a new ID and a new URL, so links to the old one point at removed content. A post you delete on Threads counts against the 100 deletes per day per account. On YouTube, delete and update each cost 50 quota units, so a bulk fix across a catalog spends quota fast. Republishing also spends from the platform's publishing cap, covered for Instagram in the publishing limit post.

X needs different handling. Edits avoid the delete problem but not the ID problem: every edit returns a new post ID, so a scheduler that stores one ID per post has to replace it on each edit, and edit_history_tweet_ids is the documented way to see the chain. The window is 30 minutes, so a tool that queues "fix later" edits for the morning will be rejected by the platform.

Design the interface around the strictest platform in the batch. If one post targets Instagram and X, a single "edit caption" button hides that one target can edit for 30 minutes and the other cannot edit at all. Show per-target capability before the click, and make "delete and republish" an explicit, confirmed action. For publishing across networks, see the social sharing API post, and the X, Threads and Instagram platform pages.

Questions developers ask about editing and deleting posts via API

Can you edit an Instagram caption via the API?
Not according to Meta's documentation. The IG Media reference documents only comment_enabled as an updatable field (checked 18 October 2026), so a caption fix means deleting and republishing, and delete is documented for Facebook Login for Business only.
Can you edit a tweet through the X API?
Yes. X's documentation allows edits for 30 minutes after posting, up to 5 edits, and each edit creates a new post ID. You send POST /2/tweets with edit_options.previous_post_id (checked 18 October 2026).
Can you edit a Threads post via API?
No edit endpoint is documented. As of 18 October 2026 Meta's Threads documentation lists DELETE /{threads-media-id}, limited to 100 deletes per day per account, and no page about editing.
Does deleting a post through the API remove it everywhere?
No. Each delete endpoint takes one platform-specific ID and acts on that post only, so a post published to several networks needs one delete call per network. No page checked on 18 October 2026 says a delete removes copies made by other users.
Which platform documents no way to edit or delete a post through its API?
TikTok. Its Content Posting API pages, checked 18 October 2026, describe creating a post and checking its status and document no edit or delete operation. Instagram documents delete but no caption edit.
How long can you edit an X post through the API?
30 minutes from the original post, with a maximum of 5 edits, as documented by X on 18 October 2026. Promoted posts, posts with polls, replies to others, reposts and scheduled posts are not editable.

Every platform claim above traces to the official page linked here, each checked on 18 October 2026. Where a page states nothing, the post says "not documented".
